Chapter 6

Doug read through all the documents that Liam forwarded to him, including the correspondence between himself and the clients. He was already developing a headache from all the back and forth between the documents he had done. He knew he had to go through all the fine print to be sure he didn’t miss any of the loopholes which Ernst and Heigl had been using against him and his company. Their poaching had been very aggressive, and he knew that they would have to get back all of those clients, or they were dead. If you showed any signs of weakness in this business, any sign at all that you couldn’t hold on to your own clients, then you left yourself vulnerable to outside attacks.

He was already thinking up some aggressive strategies that would help them get back on top and fire back at Ernst and Heigl that wouldn’t involve them selling their company. If he left New York without making a powerful statement now, he would likely have to return here again soon to avoid losing the company.

He closed his laptop as the plane began its descent into LaGuardia airport. Each time he flew into New York, his eyes often drifted over to where the Twin Towers used to be. He hadn’t been in NY then, but he had seen the towers in photos as a kid and had associated this town with those iconic images. Shaking off the sad feelings, his thoughts turned to Kearney, and he wondered what Darlene felt when she heard he had had to rush off to New York for work. She would be disappointed, definitely, but he hoped she wouldn’t be so disappointed that she wouldn’t want to have anything to do with him ever again. In his rush to get to the airport this morning, he had forgotten to get a message to her. He had called Lori on the phone and asked her to relay the message.

Doug had waited for this opportunity for what seemed like forever, and now that he had gotten it, Ernst and Heigl wouldn’t let him enjoy it. He would pay them back in spades for this, for taking him away from a date that could have gotten him at least a step closer to knowing Darlene, the woman of his dreams. He knew it in his gut that this woman was the one he had been looking for because, even from that first night, there was an element of fate in their meeting. He hadn’t felt anything so powerful before in his life, and he wondered if she felt something close to what he was feeling or if he was alone.

He exited the plane and strode forward with the rest of the first-class passengers onto the jetway. He could see Liam standing with a large placard stating “Doug Egan!” held above his head. He always had the same placard each time Doug came to town. It brought a smile to his face, and he walked towards the sign, knowing that his friend Ava would be waiting around the corner too.
